Khalanga Fair: Commemrating the bravery of the Gorkhas

Every December, the Gorkha community in Dehradun proudly celebrates the Khalanga Fair popularly known as the  'Khalanga mela' at Sagar Tal near Nalapani village in Dehradun.

This festival is celebrated in memory of martyr Birbhadra Singh, who fought against the Britishers in 1814 and defeated the English army in two battles.

Numerous Gorkhali folk dancers from different states perform on the occasion and many lip smacking Gorkhali dishes like Sel Roti with Chutney and Bhutwa are sold in tiny colourful stalls. Free community lunch  known as Ban Bhoj is served to all the visitors of the Mela in the nearby hillock.
